The project has been split up in two contracts, Zone VA and Zone VB (6.13 km and 4.83 km), valued at Rs2.18 billion and Rs1.7 billion respectively. The tunnel is a typical single-tube horseshoe type Indian Railways tunnel. It has an access tunnel of about 800 m and an access shaft of 55 m. The anticipated geology to be encountered is alternate bands of quartzite and limestone. Tunnelling equipment include road headers, hydraulic drilling jumbos and excavators. Support/lining methods as per NATM. Muck haulage with wheel loaders and low profile dumpers. The access tunnel and shaft are part of a separate Rs197.6 million contract started in June 2004, to be finished in December 2005. The planned detailed execution of the two tunnels started in August 2005 and will be finished by March 2009. The Pir Panjal tunnel forms part of an ambitious 120 km-long rail project across the Pir Panjal range. The railway line will connect the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
