The Danish-based international consulting group Cowi together with local consultancies have been designated to ensure design review and construction supervision consultancy for the Karnaphuli Tunnel.
The project is part of One Belt One Road initiative (OBOR) which consists of a trade and infrastructure network spanning from East Asia to Europe and Africa with roads, railways, ports and pipelines. OBOR aims to revive the old Silk Road. The Karnaphuli tunnel is to be 3.4km long and to run under the Karnaphuli River created as part of a planned 20km highway.
The project is worth near $530M and is mainly financed by the Chinese through Export-Import Bank of China. The 500m of tunnel approach structures and working shaft structures are to start in June and meet completion in February 2018. Work on access roads and a viaduct is planned to start in early 2018 and is to end in 2021.
