E-mail trasporti@regione.veneto.it 45/06.By the end of the year, the so-called Pedemontana highway project in Veneto is expected to be awarded. Pedemontana means foothills in Italian. A "pedemontana" is generally a road at the foot of a mountain or hills. There are two bidders. The first candidate includes Cintra (68%), Merloni Finanziaria (32%) and Ferrovial. Cintra is the concession arm of Ferrovial. The second joint venture includes Sacyr Vallehermoso, Sacyr's concession arm Itinere Infraestructuras, Sipal and INC general contractor. Final design and land expropriation will take place in 2008. Construction would start presumably in 2009 and be concluded in 2012. The route is 64.4 km, running from the A31 Valdastico junction near Dueville to the junction with the A27 Mestre-Belluno near Spresiano. Nine false tunnels are planned (Fosse, Schiavonesca, FS Bassano-Padova, FS Bassano-Castelfranco, Altivole, Riese, Trevignano, Montebelluna and Villorba). The Priabona, under the Vicenza Prealps, would be 6 km long. This toll highway will accomodate each way two 3.75 m lanes, a 3 m emergency lane, a 0.50 m shoulder and a 2.5 m central reservation. 45/07.Impregilo is leading a consortium of companies including Pedemontana Veneta, Autostrada Brescia-Padova, Autostrade per l'Italia, Autovie Venete, Grandi Lavori Fincosit, Costruzioni Maltauro, Rizzani de Eccher, Carron, Consorzio Cooperative Costruzioni (CCC), Mantovani, Intercantieri Vittadello and Serenissima Costruzioni, who has been awarded the concession contract for the design, construction and operation of the Pedemontana highway. The concession plans the construction of an approx. 90 km two-lane dual carriageway and an emergency lane between Montecchio (Vicenza) on highway A4 and Spresiano (Treviso) on highway A27. The road artery will run partially underground (approx. 15 kilometres of tunnel), whereof two bored tunnels, one in Malo (Priabona tunnel, 6,503 m) and the other in Sant' Urbano (1.7 km), and nine cut-and-cover tunnels. The overall investment is nearly EUR2 billion. The concession duration is 39 years. Construction of the infrastructure from the design phase will take 76 months. Impregilo's share represents a share of EUR630 million. Work is set to commence in the second semester of 2008. Opening is scheduled for 2013. Metro Line 1

Construction of first line Fiera-Staveco (6 km) will be staggered with construction of first section Fiera-Stazione Centrale (3.5 km), to cost €171 million, and then Stazione Centrale-Staveco. Italian government to finance 60% and city 40%. TBM to bore double-track tunnel starting from the Michelino car park at the line head in Fiera and exiting in Piazza XX Settembre near the central station where connection to the high speed line will be possible. Work to commence in spring 2004. 49/02.A joint venture headed by Geodata, with Tecnicoop, Siteco, Policreo and Ineco as partners, won the tender to carry out the final design of Phase 1 of the metrotram in Bologna, offering a discount of EUR625,000, or 25% less than the tender estimate of EUR2.5 million. The contract is for the final design of the section running from the central railway station to Maggiore Hospital and updating the final design carried out by the city of Bologna for the 3.5 km section from Fiera Michelino to the central railway station. Visit www.geodata.it, www.tecnicoop.it, www.policreo.it and www.ineco.esThe most challenging problem is the tunnel that runs from Fiera Michelino to Maggiore Hospital, which is also the costliest part of the project. For that section, a single tube tunnel solution has been preferred under Indipendenza Street and Bassi Street, with a curve radius of just 35 metres. The proposed technical solution envisages in particular to reuse the underpass at Maggiore Square as access ramp to the stop there so that disrupting excavation works will be partly avoided in a central part of the city. In addition to the benefit of the existing underpass, Maggiore Square station will not have platforms placed in front of each other but one in Indipendenza Street and another in Bassi Street, both before the sharp bend to allow trainsets to negotiate the bend slowly without reducing running times. 36/07.

Geology consisting of marls and sandstone in layers with variable thickness ranging from a few centimetres to several metres and compression strength of the sandstone that may reach 100 Mpa. The contractor will use a refurbished Lovat TBM previously used in Arezzo to bore four tunnels totalling 7 km. Concrete segmental rings comprising four hexagonal honeycomb 25 cm-thick segments, no key. As the tunnel progresses, the space between the segments and the tunnel face will be filled with cement grout. Basic design and work supervision by Snamprogetti. Project planning by Condotte d'Acqua.
