The 13.9 km-long western Metro extension linking Espoo to Helsinki, will add seven new stations, located at Matinkyla, Urheilupuisto, Tapiola, Otaniemi, Keilaniemi, Koivusaari and Lauttasaari. In addition to the stations, excavation work will be carried out for 15 vertical shafts, every 600 m, designed for emergency exit, pressure equalization, ventilation and smoke extraction. Excavation of the tunnels began in Espoo and Helsinki simultaneously in 2010. By 20.01.2013, 77.1 percent, or nearly 21.4 km of tunnel, had been completed. In January, 2013 construction work on the West Metro underground tunnel shaft started at Tapiola in the Mantyviita area. Shaft structures and the shaft building above the ground will be constructed in 2013-2014. The metro line is scheduled to open for traffic at end-2015. For further information click
