Underground Breakthrough for €114M Athlone Drainage Project

08/07/2025

The €114 million Athlone Main Drainage Scheme has recorded a successful breakthrough on its second underwater tunnel beneath the River Shannon—marking a significant milestone in the transformational infrastructure project.

Led by Uisce Éireann, the project involves the construction of critical underground assets to modernise and future-proof Athlone’s wastewater infrastructure. The recent breakthrough sees the completion of the second sub-river tunnel, seamlessly linking the town’s sewer network from east to west.

The complex operation involved deploying a tunnel boring machine (TBM) via an 8-metre-deep launch shaft on the eastern riverbank. The TBM, steered by specialist diving and tunnelling crews, advanced through challenging ground conditions comprising gravel and rock beneath the riverbed. After 22 days of subterranean excavation, the machine emerged at a receiving shaft on the west bank, completing the second and final River Shannon crossing.

Eunan Canavan, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, described the milestone as pivotal:

“The successful completion of the second, and final, River Shannon crossing is a critical milestone in the delivery of this ambitious project that will shape the future of Athlone. The finish line is now clearly in sight with works over 80% complete.”

Local authorities have also recognised the engineering accomplishment. Councillor Liam McDaniel, Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, noted:

“It’s not something people see every day, but it’s a major engineering feat that will really benefit the community – helping protect the environment and making sure our infrastructure is ready for future growth.”

Launched in 2023, the Athlone Main Drainage Scheme is now over 80% complete. Key tunnelling and shaft works have concluded, and the final tunnelling phase from Strand Carpark is currently underway. Ongoing works include cross-connections between new and existing networks, testing at Coosan West Pump Station, and preparations for commissioning the new terminal pumping station at Golden Island this summer.

The project comprises nearly three kilometres of new sewer tunnels and the construction of state-of-the-art pumping stations at Golden Island and Coosan West. Once completed, the scheme will significantly reduce sewer flooding risks, eliminate non-compliant overflows into the River Shannon, and expand capacity to support Athlone’s future growth.
