Torrens to Darlington Project Update

07/07/2025

ADELAIDE, SA — July 2025: The Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project continues to gain momentum, with June marking a month of significant progress across several key construction sites. As South Australia’s most ambitious infrastructure development, the T2D Project is not only reshaping the state’s transport network but also generating strong engagement with local industry and communities.

At the Waterloo Corner site, the precast facility—set to produce over 55,000 tunnel lining segments—is taking shape rapidly. This facility will play a crucial role in the tunnel construction phase, with segment production scheduled to begin in late 2025. The preparation of this site marks a critical step forward in ensuring the tunnel's delivery remains on track.

Several local companies have been awarded contracts as part of the facility’s development. Ballestrin is currently delivering the concrete slab works, forming the foundation of the facility's operations. Ahrens is constructing the main shed that will house production operations, while Karta, a local Aboriginal-owned company, is undertaking the vital earthworks. These partnerships reflect the project’s commitment to supporting local expertise and fostering inclusive economic growth.

Further south, diaphragm wall (D-wall) construction is progressing rapidly in the Southern Precinct. These deep, reinforced concrete walls are essential to prepare the ground for major excavations, helping to ensure the stability and safety of future tunnel works. Their successful implementation is a technical cornerstone of the T2D design.

In addition to construction progress, the T2D Alliance hosted an industry engagement event in early June, attracting more than 700 attendees. The event connected local businesses with key Alliance members, offering insights into upcoming opportunities and reinforcing the project’s dedication to collaboration with South Australian suppliers and contractors.

As the Torrens to Darlington Project advances, it continues to combine engineering excellence with local empowerment—laying not just concrete, but the foundation for a more connected and prosperous future for Adelaide.   For further information please visit https://www.t2d.sa.gov.au/ and for the tunnelbuilder archive click here 28/25
