The new HRBT’s twin tunnels will be driven by TBM Mary

25/02/2021

The name has been announced of the TBM that will bore the new twin tunnels at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, click here for the video. The TBM will be named Mary, in honor of Mary Jackson of Hampton, VA, an American mathematician and aerospace engineer at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which in 1958 was succeeded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School in Virginia Beach, team Sancti Potentes, are the  1st place winners of the TBM Naming Contest!  Honorable mentions to:

• 2nd place - Crittenden Middle School, Newport News VA

• 3rd place - Hunter B. Andrews PreK-8 School, Hampton VA

The South Island’s transformation is mainly in preparation to receive the TBM. The TBM is been built in Germany right now and now it’s ready to ship to the Hampton Road area. It will arrive in parts to the South Island, close to the Fall. The TBM will be assembled and launched early to 2022 from a pit (70 feet depth) currently under construction, to make its year-long journey across the channel to the North Island, where it  will be received in a portal constructed by the project team, disassembled, turned in the direction of the South Island, reassembled, and launched. From North to South Island, the TBM will create the second of the new twin tunnels.

In January they held a virtual HRBT Expansion Project Construction Open House, allowing the public to learn more about the current and upcoming activities along the project corridor associated with the start of construction.  Following a General Session presenting the upcoming construction work – covering the new roadway, bridges and trestles, and islands and tunnel – and highlighting the project’s design concept video, three Breakout Sessions (watch the following videos using the links in blue) one for Roadway Construction in Hampton and Norfolk, another for Tunnel Construction, and a third for Marine Construction were also held.
