TERRATEC has achieved key landmarks on Chennai Metro Phase II with the advancement of the TBM on Line 3 and the launch of another TBM on Corridor 5, reflecting strong collaboration with Tata Projects and CMRL.

TERRATEC has recorded two important milestones on Chennai Metro Phase II with the ongoing progress of machines on Line 3 and the launch of machines on Corridor 5. Both achievements highlight the strong cooperation between TERRATEC, Tata Projects Limited, and Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) as work continues across multiple underground sections of the project.

At the Kolathur site, TERRATEC’s EPBM is excavating a tunnel from Kolathur Ramp to Kolathur Station. The machine has maintained steady performance since commencement in a technically demanding environment that includes a very shallow overburden of 1.8 metres, a –3.8% gradient, and excavation beneath a busy urban corridor requiring extensive ground-protection measures. A second milestone was reached with the launch of yet another TERRATEC TBM at Kolathur Station for a drive towards Srinivasa Nagar. The alignment features mixed Grade-4/5 rock and includes a sharp 230-metre curve.

This launch coincided with another TBM breakthrough at the same station—an uncommon dual event in India—highlighting the high-level coordination across the project. The client has expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, safety performance, and engineering quality. Community engagement activities and environmental controls have helped ensure minimal disruption in surrounding neighbourhoods, while the project continues to maintain an excellent safety record. Phase II of the Chennai Metro will add nearly 119 km of new lines and approximately 128 stations, easing road congestion, improving connectivity, and supporting long-term economic growth.
