TBM Daisy the Driller officially launched

On the 6th of September the Scottish Cabinet Secretary, Roseanna Cunningham, officially launched the tunnelling phase of the Shieldhall Tunnel in Glasgow by naming the TBM, Daisy the driller. The name was chosen by Lewis Bennett a pupil from Craigton Primary School, following a competition run by Scottish Water. The project site is at Craigton in the south west of the city of Glasgow. The contract awarded to Costain-Vinci Construction Grands Projets joint venture (CVJV) is worth Euro 117.6 million.

The TBM Daisy weighs 1000 tons and has a length of 180 m. The TBM will be working 24 hours a day, five days a week at a speed of about 30 meters per day. The TBM will tunnel beneath south west Glasgow, including Pollok and Bellahouston parks and is expected to complete its journey and emerge at Queens Park after approximately 13 months and which point it will connect to the existing network.

The route of the tunnel was chosen to maximise the use of parkland and minimize disruption. The 5 km long, 4.7 m diameter tunnel between Craigton and Queen’s Park will enable Scottish Water to improve water quality in the River Clyde and its tributaries and tackle flooding. When complete in early 2018, it will provide 90,000 m3 of extra storm water storage.
