A major milestone has been reached on the Trebisacce Tunnel, the longest tunnel on the Third Mega Lot of the Jonica State Road (SS106) in Calabria. Webuild confirmed the second breakthrough, a key step in the excavation and structural completion of this 3.3‑km tunnel — one of the most technically significant structures along the new route.
A Strategic Corridor for Southern Italy
The SS106 upgrade is one of Italy’s most important infrastructure programmes, designed to transform mobility along the Ionian coasts of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia. Once complete, the new corridor will:
- Improve access to numerous coastal municipalities
- Strengthen regional connectivity between the A14 and A2 motorways
- Reduce travel times and enhance road safety
- Support economic development and tourism across Southern Italy
The Trebisacce Tunnel plays a central role in this transformation, enabling a safer, faster and more resilient alignment through the region’s complex terrain.
Engineering Progress and Workforce Impact
With the second breakthrough completed, the Third Mega Lot has reached approximately 80% progress, reflecting steady advancement across tunnels, viaducts and road sections. The project involves:
- Around 1,200 workers, including direct employees and subcontractors
- More than 880 companies engaged in the supply chain, 45% of which are based in Calabria
- Continuous coordination between Webuild and ANAS (FS Italiane Group)
This level of regional involvement underscores the project’s economic importance for Southern Italy.
A Key Structure in a Complex Mega Lot
The Trebisacce Tunnel is one of several major structures within the Third Mega Lot, but its length and geological complexity make it a flagship element of the programme. The second breakthrough confirms successful excavation from both portals and allows teams to advance with:
- Final lining
- Mechanical and electrical installations
- Safety systems
- Roadway construction
These next phases will prepare the tunnel for integration into the wider SS106 corridor.
Looking Ahead
The breakthrough marks a decisive step toward completing one of Italy’s most strategically important road upgrades. As work continues, the SS106 corridor is expected to deliver long‑term benefits for mobility, logistics and regional development across the Ionian coast.
Tunnelbuilder will continue to follow progress as the Trebisacce Tunnel moves into its final construction stages. 05/26.
