Press release - NCC to construct road and tunnel in Norway

15/01/2024

NCC has been commissioned by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to construct a new road and tunnel between Breivika and Lerstad in Ålesund Municipality in Norway. The order value is approximately SEK 1.5 billion (EUR131.36 million).

“This is a very important project for both the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and Bypakke Ålesund. The new road will ensure efficient and future-oriented traffic flows into central Ålesund,” says Kjell Inge Davik, Director of the Construction Division at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

NCC is to construct route E136, a 3.3-km, four-lane road that will primarily pass through a tunnel, which is also part of the contract. The road is the main part of the major Bypakke Ålesund infrastructure project, which is an initiative to reduce road traffic in Ålesund. In addition to relieving pressure on the existing road network and creating space for more public transport, the new road will also shorten travel times and improve accessibility and road safety.

“This project is particularly well aligned with NCC’s expertise in road and tunnel construction, and together with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration we have set the prerequisites for a successful partnership. We are delighted to have been entrusted with this task and look forward to commencing work on this important project,” says Kenneth Nilsson, Head of NCC Infrastructure.

NCC is highly experienced in the construction of roads and tunnels. For example, NCC is constructing sections of Stockholm’s new metro line and, in recent years, has built two new road tunnels and a roundabout under the seabed in the Faroe Islands, where the final Sandoy tunnel was handed over in December 2023.

Construction is set to start in spring 2024 and the project is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The order value of about SEK 1.5 billion (EUR131.36 million) will be registered in the Infrastructure business area in the first quarter of 2024. For further information please click no/198 and click here. 02/24.
