Thousands of Victorian jobs seekers can train and upskill as
part of the state’s biggest-ever public transport project thanks to the launch
of MetroHub – a one-stop-shop for jobs and training.
Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll today
visited the centre on St Kilda Road, near the future Anzac Station, which is
providing construction jobs and training for Metro Tunnel’s $6 billion Tunnels
and Stations package.
MetroHub is a partnership between Cross Yarra Partnership
and Holmesglen Institute, based at the TAFE’s Southbank campus. It has an
emphasis on opportunities for priority job seekers through partners like
Holmesglen’s Skills and Jobs Centre, Whitelion, CareerSeekers and the Asylum
Seeker Resource Centre.
People seeking a job on the project will be able to drop
into MetroHub and register their interest or express their interest online via
Seek.
Tradies, crane operators and tunnel boring machine crews
will all be needed to build the urgently needed Metro Tunnel, which will create
nearly 7,000 jobs, including positions for almost 800 apprentices, trainees and
cadets.
The Tunnels and Stations package will create 5,000 of those
jobs, including providing a start for 500 apprentices, trainees and engineering
cadets, who will study and train at MetroHub in programs designed for young
people looking for a career in construction.
The Metro Tunnel will achieve the Andrews Labor Government’s
Major Project Skills Guarantee, which requires at least 10 per cent of work
hours to be undertaken by apprentices, trainees or engineering cadets.
Cross Yarra Partnership – a consortium led by Lendlease,
John Holland and Bouygues Construction – will support training of thousands of
workers over the next seven years. The MetroHub will help young Victorians
enter the workforce and kick-start their careers in the construction and rail
industry.
The Metro Tunnel will transform Melbourne’s rail network
with hi-tech signalling, bigger and longer High Capacity Metro Trains and
turn-up-and-go services.
