Kanpur Metro’s Phase 1 project update

27/12/2023

Kanpur Metro’s Phase 1 project achieved a significant milestone as Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL), in collaboration with Gulermak, clinched the contract for Package KNPCC-11. This involves constructing a 4.08 km underground section connecting Agriculture Depot to Double Pullia Ramp, inclusive of three underground stations at Rawatpur, Kakadeo, and Double Pullia. Valued at Rs. 762.50 crore, this marks the third underground package within the expansive 32.38 km Phase 1 project, following Line-1’s KNPCC-05 and KNPCC-06.

The bidding process initiated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) estimated a project cost of Rs. 1025 crore, with KPIL – Gulermak JV emerging as the lowest bidder during the financial bid opening in October.

This venture encompasses designing and constructing tunnels, ramps, and three metro stations along with architectural finishes, financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through a €650 million loan approved in July 2020.

The groundwork and pre-construction activities are slated to begin in Q1 2024, followed by the actual construction in early Q2 2024, with tunneling projected to start by mid-2025.

Anticipating the use of at least two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for six tunnels, there’s speculation that Gulermak might employ their Terratec machines, pending confirmation expected by mid-2024.

This project marks a pivotal development for Kanpur, strengthening its connectivity and bolstering its status as a rapidly evolving urban hub. For further information please click in/87. 54/23.
