Italy/Liguria –TBM launch for the Bisagno Flood Relief tunnel on October 1st

14/09/2025

On October 1st, 2025, the TBM (1,280 tons) will be launched — it arrived by ship from China at the Messina terminal last February.

The use of the TBM will accelerate the excavation of the 5.5 km-long tunnel of the Bisagno flood relief system in Genoa, which will allow floodwaters from the Bisagno stream to be diverted directly into the sea.

The assembly operations of the TBM are currently being finalized. Once fully operational, the machine will advance approximately 20 meters per day.

The overall underground project for the conveyance of the diverted flow from the Bisagno riverbed and its discharge into the sea (over a total length of 6,650 m) consists, from upstream to downstream, of:

  • an initial section of naturally excavated tunnel with a policentric cross-section, built using the conventional excavation method (length: 645.906 m);
  • a chamber and a launch shaft required for the assembly of the TBM (lengths: 50 m and 120 m, respectively);
  • a subsequent section of naturally excavated tunnel to be bored using an open TBM (rock type), extending almost to the outfall of the flood relief tunnel (length: 5,785.867 m);
  • a final section of naturally excavated tunnel, built using the conventional method, located under Corso Italia (length: 48 m).

The Temporary Group of Companies (RTI) composed of Research Consorzio Stabile scarl (Naples), Amec srl (Santa Venerina, Catania), and Manelli Impresa srl (Monopoli, Bari) were awarded the contract for Lot 2 of the works related to the construction of the Bisagno flood relief tunnel in the municipality of Genoa.
