The central government has approved the Nashik-Pune High-Speed Railway project involving an investment of Rs 16,039 crore. The line will be funded by the government of Maharashtra (20%) and Ministry of Railway (20%) and Domestic Financial Institutions (60%).
The project will be executed in 3.5 years -from the date of its financial closure - by Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MRIDC or MahaRail), a JV of Government of Maharashtra and Ministry of railways.
At present, all trains between Pune and Nashik go via Kalyan or commuters travel to Daund-Manmad and then take a train to Nashik, spending more than six to seven hours to travel. By road, the distance between Pune to Nashik is 212 Km, which is taking about 5 to 6-hour journey due to heavy traffic.
The new 234 km Semi High-Speed Double Rail line between Pune and Nashik would have 24 stations,19 viaducts with a 15.98 km in total length and 17 tunnels with a 21.02 km total length: the longest tunnel and bridge will be 6.64 Km and 3.12 km long.
It will be the first Broad Gauge Railway Line with speed of 200 Km/h with future increment capability up to 250 Km/h between both cities. The Greenfield Semi-High-Speed Double line will provide direct connectivity between Pune and Nashik. The journey between the two cities will be completed in less than 2 hrs.
The Mumbai and the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) along with Pune and Nashik forms what is often referred to as the Golden Triangle of Maharashtra. The project will give a boost to the development of Nashik-Pune-Ahmednagar and also the surrounding districts in Maharashtra. It will also facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce from the surrounding areas of the state
