At its meeting on 30/03/2022 the Swiss Federal Council approved the general project for the construction of the third tube of the Rosenberg tunnel on the A1 in St. Gallen; the two existing tubes will be fully restored, aiming to maintain the city highway efficiency in the long term. Works will not start until 2030 and will last about six years. The investment is around EUR 397.21 million (CHF410 million).  

The existing twin-tube tunnel has been in service since 1987 and requires an overall refurbishment. The upgrading works in the existing tunnel will be done a tube at a time, the new tube will already be in operation to avoid paralyzing traffic on the motorway and road network in the region during construction.  

In the city of St. Gallen, the A1 motorway runs through a densely populated area and will be equipped with noise barriers, sound-absorbing coatings and flooring to reduce the acoustic impact.  

Next steps 

The roadmap now provides for the expansion and subsequent publication of the executive project "Third Rosenberg tube". Once the planning approval process has been completed, the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO)  will be able to proceed with the detailed project and the assignment of the works. The start of construction is not planned before 2030, with a 6 years duration.  

Part of the National Road Strategic Development Program 

The third tube of the Rosenberg tunnel is integrated into the National Roads Strategic Development Program, Horizon 2030, and it is part of the overall decongestion project of the A1 in St Gallen, which also provides for the redevelopment of the motorway section, including the addition of a lane between St. Fiden and Neudorf, and the construction of an underground connection towards the freight station area, integrated with an extension towards the Appenzell hinterland.  Click ch/69 for tunnelbuilder archive and Visit https://www.admin.ch. 13/22.
