On 31.10.2014, installation of the non-ballasted track was completed in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. General contractor Transtec Gotthard, at a distance of around 54 m from the south portal, cast the "golden sleeper". Tracklaying consumed around 131,000 cu m of concrete and 380,000 monolithic sleepers, and involved installation of 290 km of rail. The entire 57 km of the world's longest railway tunnel can now be travelled using diesel locomotives, facilitating installation of the railway infrastructure systems.
