First breakthrough for the Phase 4 of Delhi MRTS

A major milestone in DMRC’s Phase 4 construction work was achieved at the end of December 2021 as the first ever tunnelling stretch of Phase-IV of Delhi MRTS was completed at Krishna Park Extension on the Janakpuri West - RK Ashram Marg corridor with the TBM EPB Triveni (6.52 m diameter and 73 m long)  breaking through, after boring a 1.4 km long tunnel.

The Joint Venture HCC-VCCL (Hindustan Construction Company Ltd and Vensar Constructions Company Ltd), took charge of the package DC-06 contract from the beginning of 2020, and started the main tunnelling work on this stretch in April 2021.

Two parallel tunnels for the up and down line are being constructed on this stretch which is a part of the 2.2 km long underground section from Janakpuri West to Keshopur. The TBM will now be dismantled, transported and reassembled at Vikaspuri Shaft for driving the parallel 1.4 km up-line tunnel.

This new tunnel - running along the Outer ring road - is a continuation of the earlier Magenta line tunnel that was already constructed for the presently operational Botanical Garden - Janakpuri West corridor. The tunnel has been constructed approximately at a depth of 14 to 16 m, below the multi-storied built-up structures. During the construction the ground movements have been monitored with highly sensitive instruments fixed on the nearby structures.

Over a thousand rings - cast at the fully mechanized casting yard setup at Mundka - have been installed in the tunnel with a 5.8 m inner diameter. The concrete segments were cured with steam curing system to achieve early strength.

The Janakpuri West - R.K. Ashram Line corridor - with a 7.74 km underground section and a 21.8km elevated section - is expected to be operational by June 2024.

The Phase-IV of Delhi Metro includes the construction of 6 new lines with 104 km totally. The Central Government has approved 3 of the 6 lines, with a total length of 65 km:  Magenta Line (Line-8 extension) from Janakpuri West to R.K. Ashram (28.92 km) with 22 stations, Silver Line from Aerocity  to Tughlakabad (23.6 km) with 15 stations and Pink Line from Mukundpur to Maujpur (12.58 km) with 8 stations. For further information and to read more about the project please click here and in/11 for the tunnelbuilder archive and also visit http://www.delhimetrorail.com. 05/22.
