On 12 June 2025, the last part of the new Casacastalda tunnel was demolished as part of the works to widen the Valfabbrica SS 318 (Perugia-Ancona route) to four lanes: click here to watch the video. The breakthrough took place in the presence of the President of the Umbria Region, Stefania Proietti, the Mayor of Valfabbrica, Enrico Bacoccoli, and the Head of Anas Umbria, Lamberto Nicola Nibbi. 

The works consist of the construction of a second carriageway, alongside the existing one, which was opened to traffic in 2016 as a variant to the old route. The entire project is expected to open to traffic in March 2026, bringing the Umbrian section of the Perugia-Ancona route up to a uniform four lanes, with substantial benefits in terms of safety and travel times. The section is approximately 3 km long and includes the Picchiarella (874 m) and Casacastalda (1,545 m) tunnels. 

The construction of the two viaducts Tre Vescovi and Calvario, with a total length of 190 m, is also underway, with the structural part of both already completed.
