The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed the construction of 18 new Metro corridors covering a total length of 206.5 km under Phase-V. The proposal has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for approval.
Of the proposed corridors, four will be entirely new: Mayapuri to Kashmiri Gate, CGO Complex to Surya Vihar (Faridabad), Mayur Vihar Phase-3 to Loni Border, and Najafgarh to Nangloi. The remaining 14 corridors are planned extensions of existing lines. Once operational, the expanded network is expected to bring Metro connectivity to nearly all parts of Delhi, significantly enhancing public transportation access and reducing vehicular congestion.
The proposed corridors are divided into two segments - Phase V (A), comprising three corridors whose detailed project reports (DPRs) are ready, and the remaining 15 corridors to be taken up in the second stage. In total, Phase V will feature 128 stations, with 115 km of elevated tracks (including 79 stations) and 91.5 km underground (including 49 stations). The longest planned corridor will stretch from Ballabgarh to Palwal, while the Mayur Vihar Phase-3 to Loni Border corridor will span 21 km, making it the second longest in this phase.
The initial 15.8 km of Phase V will include the Central Vista Corridor from Indraprastha via India Gate, the Aerocity to Airport Terminal 1 line, and the Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj corridor. Both the Aerocity, Airport Terminal 1 and Tughlakabad-Kalindi Kunj routes will serve as extensions of the under-construction Swarn Rekha (Tughlakabad-Aerocity) line.
Five of the proposed corridors will link to regions in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. While an in-principle nod is required to prepare the DPRs for these, the DMRC has stressed the importance of these links for regional integration. Click here and in/11 for tunnelbuilder archive.
