Northern Tunnel Portal construction update - Excavation of a TBM extraction box is underway. The extraction box will be used to remove the two TBMs Merle and Else when they arrive in late 2021. A major milestone for the project team occurred in late August with piling for the tunnel portal structure being finished. Installation of the roof will start this month.
Sewer relocation continues under the rail corridor and in Victoria Park.
Upcoming rail corridor work
Before 05/10/2021 work will take place next to and within the rail corridor to install a gantry crane, which will be used to remove the two TBMs when they finish tunnelling.
Rail corridor pedestrian bridge closure
Cross River Rail’s twin tunnels will be located beneath the pedestrian bridge that spans the Northern Tunnel Portal site, as shown in the image below.
From mid-September until late 2021, intermittent temporary closures of the pedestrian bridge are required during bridge strengthening work and while tunnelling activities - excavating and constructing a ramp - occur beneath the pedestrian bridge. A pedestrian diversion will be in place during the closures.
