Today TBM Merle broke through at the Northern Portal site, bringing the Cross River Rail project’s year of tunnelling to an end, click here for the video. The Cross River Rail's twin tunnels from Boggo Road in the south, under the Brisbane River and the CBD and out to the Northern Portal near Normanby are now completed.
TBM Else's demobilization has commenced, starting with the cutterhead being removed and then lifted from the 12-m-deep Northern Portal extraction box using the same 280- t gantry crane that lowered her into the Woolloongabba station box in early 2021. The pieces will be moved to a storage area on site and then loaded onto oversized trucks for removal. The TBMs are expected to then be re-used on other tunnelling projects.
