On 11/09/2015 a 40 t piling rig drilled the first pile at the northern interchange at Wahroonga junction. This is for the construction of the first well for the NorthConnex tunnel in Sydney. The well which is 12 m wide, 16 m long and 45 m deep will provide access for personnel and machines that will build the North Connex.
The wells, which will be built to a depth of 93 m, will be used for the start of the road-headers that will dig the tunnel to the north and south. The NorthConnex will be a twin-tube tunnel, which is about 9 km, linking the M1 motorway in Wahroonga with the M2 motorway in West Pennant Hills (with a capacity of 3 lanes in each direction. The tunnel, once completed, will be used by 100,000 vehicles / day, 50,000 for each direction. Major tunnelling work is expected to commence later this year, with full project completion expected in 2019. Click here and here for tunnelbuilder archive.
