Brenner Base Tunnel: Construction Outlook for 2026

09/01/2026

Construction activity on the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) is set to intensify further in 2026, with several key works advancing simultaneously along the alignment.

In the H53 Pfons–Brenner section, the two tunnel boring machines Wilma and Olga will continue their northbound drives. Their progress will play a crucial role in completing excavation of the main western and eastern running tunnels, representing a major step forward for this section of the project.

At the same construction lot, excavation of the main tunnels will also continue using conventional drill-and-blast methods, with works advancing towards the Brenner Pass. This combination of mechanised and conventional tunnelling remains essential to managing the complex geological conditions encountered along the route.

Further south, at the Riol construction site, recent weeks have seen significant progress on the railway underpass, a strategically important structure that underpins the advancement of subsequent works in this area. Completion of this element will enable smoother coordination between surface infrastructure and underground construction activities.

Overall, 2026 is expected to be a pivotal year for the Brenner Base Tunnel, marked by sustained excavation progress and the delivery of key structural milestones across multiple sites.
