BBT - TBM Excavation Completed on the Italian Side

BBT - TBM Excavation Completed on the Italian Side

Flavia, the last Italian TBM for the BBT project, has reached the Brenner Pass, completing the excavation of the west main tunnel in lot H61 Mules. This marks the end of mechanized excavation on the Italian side of the BBT project.

The TBM - launched in April 2019 - completed 14.3 km of tunnel, installing over 65,000 precast segments.

In April 2023, approximately 3.5 km from arriving at the Brenner Pass, the TBM Flavia had suffered a stop: the high coverage of over 1200 m and the low resistance of the fractured rocks had meant that the rock mass, pressing against the TBM, prevented its advancement for a few months. Before Flavia, two TBMs had already reached the state border. Serena, the TBM that excavated most of the exploratory tunnel on the Italian side, reached the Brenner Pass in November 2021. Virginia, Flavia's twin sister, arrived at the Brenner Pass in March 2023.  In total, the three TBMs excavated nearly 43 km up to the Italian-Austrian border.
