In February 2021 the project company "Modern Urban Mobility 2030+" (MUM 2030) - established in 2019 by Holding Graz revealed a new feasibility study on the urban mobility systems for the provincial capital Graz and the Styrian central area. The study has presented the Graz subway project: estimated cost EUR 3.3 billion, with EUR 3.17 billion allocated for infrastructure and EUR 0.16 billion allocated for rolling stock. The city of Graz, the state of Styria, and the federal government are currently in discussions regarding the financing for the project.
The new metro network will be composed of two new lines with 36 km/h travel average and 80 km/h top speed:
- the East-West M1 line, 11.9km long with 13 stops, from Berliner Ring to Jakominiplatz, where there would be an interchange with M2, and then to Graz Hauptbahnhof and Eggenberg;
- the North-South M2 line, 13.5km long with 14 stops, from a future S-Bahn station at Gösting to Jakominiplatz, S-Bahn interchanges at Don Bosco and Wetzelsdorf, and a park-and-ride site at Webling;
The metro network will be underground and carried out by mining. Only the stops have to be built using the open construction method.
The Graz’s metro will improve the existing systems, ensuring good connections and links to the regions around Graz and optimal interaction with trams, buses and S-Bahn. The project will include 11 transfer points with the existing tram lines, 12 with the bus and 4 S-Bahn transfer hubs .
By 2030 the metro is expected to increase the use of public transport by up to 41 % and to reduce car traffic by 12 %. It is estimated that 43 % of the residents of Graz will find a metro stop within 600 m. Previewed opening will be in 2030. For further on the project click here and here.
