Austria – The Feldkirch Urban Tunnel Project

The Feldkirch urban tunnel will consist of four branches – Felsenau (893 m), Tisis (1,598 m), Tosters (903 m) and Altstadt (289 m) – connected by a central underground roundabout with a diameter of 70 m:

  • Tosters tunnel will serve as a link to the Kapfweg industrial area; an additional direct access to the LKH hospital will be provided via Hohle Gasse.
  • Altstadt (Old Town) tunnel will connect the city centre and the LKH (Regional Hospital). The 270-m exploratory tunnel behind the Teacher Training College will serve as an escape and maintenance tunnel.
  • Felsenau tunnel (893 m) will provide the connection to the Vorarlberg Road (L190) towards Bludenz and to the Feldkirch–Frastanz motorway junction.
  • Tisis tunnel will connect to Liechtensteiner Strasse (L191a) and the Schaanwald border crossing. Its 1,212-m exploratory tunnel will later be used as an escape and rescue passage.

This is a crucial project for urban development and for solving Feldkirch’s traffic, air quality, and noise pollution issues in the region of Vorarlberg. Click here for the video.

In September, the consortium consisting of Jaeger Bau, Strabag and Hilti & Jehle –encharged of the main tunnel construction  - built a 90 m bridge with a conveyor belt, which will allow the transport of excavated material from the Felsenau site across the state road L190 and the Ill river. In the area of the former Westbahn railway line, a loading facility is being built for subsequent transport by rail. On 3 November, the Rhomberg Sersa railway group began construction of the tracks. Once excavation is completed, the loading facility and the approximately 400-m connecting railway line will be dismantled.

The excavated material, amounting to around one million tonnes of rock, will be loaded directly onto the train at the Felsenau portal and transported via the connecting railway to the Rheintal Resource Center (RCR) of Rhomberg Bau, where it will first be classified and temporarily stored. Over the coming years, it will be processed and refined at the Rhomberg facilities and re-introduced to the market as needed—for example, for road construction, the production of aggregates for concrete and asphalt, or for backfilling mining areas.

In addition to track construction and work on the loading platform, further preparations for the construction of the main tunnel are underway. As part of the Altstadt (Old Town) Portal construction section, the site is currently being set up, and an additional noise barrier is being installed along Duxgasse. Following the lifting of the partial work stoppage imposed by the authorities, preparatory work at the Felsenau site is also progressing at full speed, particularly the installation of utility lines and the construction of the concrete batching plant.
