In March, three months earlier than expected, 50% of the Toyo/Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel’s excavation was exceeded, reaching 5.03 km (51.7%). Once complete the tunnel will connect Medellín with the port of Uraba in just 4.5 hours. It will be the longest road tunnel in South America at 9.73 km in length.
The project includes, in addition to this main tunnel, viaducts, other short tunnels, and open air roads, which will enable the connection between the MAR 1 and MAR 2 motorways with the Uraba harbour development.
The section 2 between Santa Fe de Antioquia – Canasgordas of this road is under the National Government’s responsibility with a COP1400 bn investment. Last month INVIAS awarded the two construction contracts, total value COP800 bn. A tender for the E&M equipment inside the tunnel will be published later.
The main tunnel and its parallel safety tunnel – will be connected by bypasses. The safety tunnel is driven from two adits located in the Canasgordas and Giraldo municipalities. The development has reached 5,660 meters of tunnel excavated, 8 pedestrian and 4 car bypasses have also been completed. Click here for a video, here and co/27 for tunnelbuilder archive.
