Turin Metro Line 2: A Major Opportunity for the Local Economy

On September 30, 2024, more than 150 companies from the Piedmont region, along with several major international firms, attended the conference "Opportunities for the Local Economy," focused on the Turin Metro Line 2 project. The event was organized by Unione Industriali Torino, Confindustria Piemonte, and Ance Torino in collaboration with Infra.To.

The new Metro Line 2 will play a key role in advancing Turin's ecological transition, significantly enhancing the local public transportation network. Additionally, it will contribute to the urban redevelopment of the city’s northern area, where the line will begin its route.

Progress on the project continues following the appointment of extraordinary commissioner Bernardino Chiaia by the Italian government. In July, Infra. To announced the first tender for Project Management Consulting (PMC) and design verification services. This paves the way for essential tenders in 2025 to select contractors for the signaling system, rolling stock, and civil works.

Currently, the construction of the Rebaudengo-Porta Nuova section of Line 2 is funded with €1.8 billion. Should an additional €550 million become available, the project can extend to the Polytechnic University, with that segment being offered for tender as an optional section. The total cost will be divided between train procurement and management systems (approximately €450 million), with the remainder allocated to civil works, stations, and other infrastructure such as non-traction systems.

Commissioner Chiaia emphasized that even small businesses can contribute to the project through areas such as digital innovation, plant engineering, and precision machining. Piedmont has the specialized skills necessary to handle various aspects of the project, including turnstiles, elevators, escalators, fire prevention systems, air conditioning, cybersecurity, traffic data analysis, ticketing, sensors, and predictive maintenance.
