Tunnel boring machine (TBM)
Lilia has reached a major milestone in the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT), having successfully crossed the
Werner fault zone and completed
6 kilometers of excavation. As it progresses, the machine is also installing the tunnel’s concrete lining rings in tandem with the excavation work. With only
2.1 km remaining to reach its final destination in
Navis, located in the southern section of Lot H41 (Sill Gorge–Pfons), Lilia continues its steady advance through complex geological terrain. Launched on
May 2, 2023, Lilia has already navigated through both the
Viggartal and
Walzn fault zones. The TBM, with a diameter of
10.4 meters, was named by the students of the
St. Peter-Ellbögen primary school. Its name is derived from
Lilium, the Latin word for lily—a symbol of purity, echoing the clean, fresh air of the Alpine valleys where the tunnel is being built. Lilia's progress marks another key step forward in the development of one of Europe’s most ambitious rail infrastructure projects. For further information on the project
