12/02/2010
Stuttgart 21 project starts in GermanyWork on the Stuttgart 21 project finally started on 02.02.2010. Initially, the existing Stuttgart main station will be replaced with a subsurface station 12m below ground. The historic main building will be retained, and will provide access to the four platforms and eight tracks of the future station. A feature of the project will be the 9.5 km-long Filder tunnel, running south from the main station to a new station serving Stuttgart airport and the trade fair grounds. The second part of the project will comprise the development of the high-speed line to Ulm, to be built parallel to the A8 Autobahn. The total investment for the railway project Stuttgart-Ulm divided into EUR4.088 billion for Stuttgart 21 (57 km with 33 km underground) and approximately EUR2 billion for the Wendlingen-Ulm (60 km with 30 km in tunnel). The project will be completed by 2019. For project history click de/22 and for official document click here. Visit www.stuttgart21.de. 06/10.
