Work continues on the construction of 13 km (Lot 3A) of the new railway line - almost entirely underground – linking to the future Brenner Base Tunnel. The new infrastructure will begin from the existing Verona-Brennero railway line, at Roncafort, and will reconnect to the south in the Acquaviva area. At the beginning of 2023 RFI - Rete Ferroviaria Italiana awarded the contract for the Lot3A involving design and construction of the Trento bypass, to the Tridentum Consortium, made up of Webuild Italia (leader of the group), Ghella, Collini Lavori and Seli Overseas.
The construction activities of the southern adit will allow the assembly and the launch of the TBMs. Two (Dual Mode and 9.68 m in diameter) of the four TBMs that will excavate the double-tube and 10.6 km long Trento tunnel. These TBMs had already arrived in Italy between May and June. Their transport from the Marghera harbour to the southern adit construction site in Mattarello takes place by road. Two TBMs will undertake the excavation from the south, in a northerly direction, and two from the north, in a southerly direction. The use of TBMs will allow an average advancement of 15-20 m/day.
The project, worth approximately 1.3 billion euros, is aimed at encouraging the rail modal shift to freight transport. The work, included in the European TEN-T Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor, is one of the priority lots. Click here for more information on the project, here and it/270 for tunnelbuilder archive.
