First TBM Debohra breakthrough for the U2 metro line in Vienna

On 6th November TBM Debohra - length 127 m and weight 1,300 t -  has reached an important milestone for the U2 metro line in Vienna: after 240 m of underground work from Matzleinsdorfer Platz, it has successfully reached first shaft in the 5th district, the emergency exit under Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse. It's the first breakthrough on its way to Augustinplatz in the seventh district. The TBM has installed over 1,000 segments (171 rings) for the lining of the U2 tunnel, which will later connect Seestadt.

The 17,800 tons of excavated material has been transported backwards on a conveyor belt inside Debohra, until the shaft at Matzleinsdorfer Platz, saving 20,000 truck journeys and 75 tons of CO₂.

The TBM Debohra will be now checked for maintenance before start digging towards station shaft U2 Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse near Bacherplatz.

With the completion of the U2 to Matzleinsdorfer Platz in 2030, the U2 will get a new route tunnel from Schottentor heading south and will then travel from the Rathaus junction station via the new U2xU3 Neubaugasse, U2xU4 Pilgramgasse and U2 Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse stations to the new U2xS Matzleinsdorfer Platz terminus. From then on, the route between Karlsplatz and Frankhplatz will be served exclusively by the new, fully automatic U5.
