On January 31, 2024 Wiener Linien and the U2 17-21 consortium, consisting of Strabag and Porro Group, welcomed the news that a TBM  (120 m length and 1,200 t weight) to be used for the construction of the new U2 metro line tunnels in Viennais now ready for delivery.

The TBM will be now dismantled into individual parts and in the next few months it will be transported from the Herrenknecht factory in Schwanau, Germany, to Vienna, where it will be reassembled at Matzleinsdorfer Platz. From autumn 2024 the TBM - with a drive power of 1.92 megawatts - will dig 4 km tunnels with an excavation diameter of 6.84 m -  from Matzleinsdorfer Platz station to Augustinplatz in the seventh district, connecting all four new stations (U2xS Matzleinsdorfer Platz, U2 Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse, U2xU4 Pilgramgasse, U2xU3 Neubaugasse) and their shafts. The excavated muck will be removed via the central shaft at Matzleinsdorfer Platz, saving 20,000 lorry journeys through the city and 75 t of CO2.
