Work started in August three months behind schedule on the 5,860 m-long Mala Kapela tunnel awarded to Coop Costruttori for €34.7 million. Completion expected in June 2005. The contract value is €25.45 million. This amount does not include E&M equipment. Completion of the work is set for December 2003 and opening in June 2004. Croatian contractor Hidroelektra Niskogradnja and Czech contractor Subterra started excavation of the 2 x 2,290 m-long Plasina tunnel in November on motorway section Bosiljevo-Sveti Rok, part of the Zagreb-Split motorway. This is a 4.1 km 8 m-wide single-tube tunnel for two lanes. The tunnel would be built using the drill/blast method through limestone. The tunnel would pass through the Biokovo mountain to connect county road Z-6179 in Rastovac, Zagvozd municipality in the north with local road L-67177 in Bast, Baska Voda municipality in the south. The project includes a 3.5 km north access road and a 2.9 km south access road. The tunnel will be a direct link from the hinterland to the coastal Adriatic area and the Adriatic motorway.The company is seeking partners, either infrastructure operator or construction company, to join the concession company. According to feasibility studies, first class vehicles would pay a EUR2.6 toll. The estimated cost to build the tunnel is EUR50 million. Joint venture of Spie Batignolles and Mediteran Union Tunel awarded three tunnels on the Zagreb-Rijeka motorway at Vileki, Javorova Kosa and Pod Vugles. A fourth at Sveti Marco will be excavated by Strabag of Austria. Recent breakthrough at 5.6 km Sveti Rok tunnel reported. October 1999.   Civil Engineering Institute of Croatia reports completion of 5.67 km Sveti Rok tunnel driven from the south by Konstruktor Split and from the north by Hidroelektra Zagreb over a six-year period from 1993. Rock conditions were good, with no soft or unexpected ground, but two natural caves were encountered, one of which was quite long and deep. This is the first of 3 tunnels planned for the next 10 years as Croatia begins the modernisation of its railway system. At 14.3 km, the single-tube, twin-track Cicarija tunnel on the Rijeka-Istria line will be the longest and most costly at $700 million. The other two tunnels are Krapina 4 & 5 on the line between Krapina and Varazdin. These are also single tubes and are 8.5 km and 1.1 km respectively and budgeted at $105 million and $15 million. In the longer term, another nine tunnels will be required ranging from 3.6 km to 12.9 km in length with a total length of 74.3 km. Details from Hrvatske Zeljeznice, the Croatian Railways authority.
