This is the first of 3 tunnels planned for the next 10 years as Croatia begins the modernisation of its railway system. At 14.3 km, the single-tube, twin-track Cicarija tunnel on the Rijeka-Istria line will be the longest and most costly at $700 million. The other two tunnels are Krapina 4 & 5 on the line between Krapina and Varazdin. These are also single tubes and are 8.5 km and 1.1 km respectively and budgeted at $105 million and $15 million. In the longer term, another nine tunnels will be required ranging from 3.6 km to 12.9 km in length with a total length of 74.3 km. Details from Hrvatske Zeljeznice, the Croatian Railways authority.
