Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Authority has decided on a new $140 million two-lane, immersed tube tunnel beneath the River Tyne to be financed, designed, built and operated by a private consortium. The new tunnel will effectively dual the existing A19, one of the key economic corridors in the North-East of England. For its crossing of the river, the tunnel will consist of 90 m-long precast concrete caissons. It handed Volker Stevin Marine the GBP16 million contract to manufacture, transport and submerse the tunnel units that will form the structure's 360 m immersed tube section. The contract involves the construction of four 90 m-long split sections of rectangular precast and reinforced concrete, which are 8.5 m by 15 m in size and altogether will require 14,400 cubic metres of concrete. The tunnel sections will be built in the dry dock before being floated down the Tyne adjacent to the existing tunnel where they are expected to be submerged in Autumn 2009. TT2 began preliminary works on the 1.6 km tunnel in April and is set to begin the cut-and-cover section of the structure this summer. Visit www.halcrow.com 24/08.French-owned Bouygues Travaux Publics has appointed consultants HPR to design and manage the new Tyne crossing. The brief will include design coordination and designing components of the scheme, managing regulatory approvals and consents for the scheme, and design of highway works, the immersed tunnel, cut-and-cover tunnel approaches, bridges and buildings. The new Tyne crossing will deliver a second two-lane 1.6 km vehicle tunnel under the River Tyne to ease traffic congestion between East Howdon and Jarrow, and will complete the dualling of the A19 from its junction with the A1 in southeast Northumberland to north Yorkshire. The new tunnel is expected to open in 2010 and the refurbished existing tunnel complete in late 2011 to bring it up to modern safety standards. Construction costs are estimated at GBP260 million. Restricted invitation to tender, deadline 16th May, 2001, for design and target cost construction of $150 million, 2 km-long Stonehenge bypass tunnel in chalk for UK Highways Agency, Birmingham, fax +44 (0)1216 788299. This is notionally a cut and cover tunnel with bored option. However, cut and cover is not a realistic proposition in an area of such archaeological importance, so the underground option is likely to be chosen. Visit www.highways.gov.uk 38/01.A jv between Balfour Beatty and Costain has been awarded an improvement scheme contract for the A303 road close to Stonehenge by the Highways Agency. The project includes a bypass for the village of Winterbourne Stoke and a 2 km tunnel for the A303. The jv will be supported by designers Halcrow and Gifford. Construction work to start in 2005, subject to Public Inquiry. Visit www.highways.gov.uk 14/02.The government has shelved plans to build a 2.1 km tunnel by burying the A303 in the surroundings of Stonehenge because the tunnel's estimated cost has ballooned from GBP284 million two years ago to GBP470 million. The new estimate would have made the Stonehenge tunnel one of the most expensive stretches of road ever planned, exceeding the 1.6 km Limehouse link tunnel from the City to Canary Wharf in east London, which cost GBP450 million in the early 1990s. The increase in the cost was due to two main factors: very large quantities of soft, weak chalk and a high water table, with the ground water potentially rising to the surface at times of heavy rainfall. These factors would significantly complicate the tunnelling process and extend the overall construction period of the scheme. Construction was due to have started this spring and the tunnel would have been completed by 2009. Click uk/34. 30/05.

Highways England has shortlisted the following three international groups to build the EUR1.85 bn (GBP1.7bn) Stonehenge tunnel:  BM JV (Bouygues Travaux Publics SAS and J Murphy & Sons Ltd), HD JV (Hochtief Infrastructure GmbH and Dragados SA) and MORE JV (FCC Construccion SA -42.5%, Salini Impregilo SPA-42,5% and BeMo Tunnelling UK Ltd -15%). The three groups in the next 6 months will have a competitive dialogue with Highways England. They  have to submit their final tenders by October. The winner will be announced in 2021.

At the beginning of March in the 2020 budget document from the UK government confirmed the funding of the new, high-quality dual carriageway and of the two-mile tunnel in the South West to speed up journeys on the A303 removing traffic from the iconic setting of Stonehenge.

The government is transforming regional connections through the largest ever investment in England’s motorways and major A roads. The second Road Investment Strategy (RIS2) will spend over £27 billion between 2020 and 2025. The project is included in the RIS2. For further information please use this link . 13/20.
