The TBM Margherita is advancing at an average speed of 11 m/day, at a depth of approximately 105 m, while excavating the odd tube of the Cefalù tunnel on the Ogliastrillo-Castelbuono section, part of the Palermo-Messina railway doubling project. The TBM has reached 75% completion with the excavation of 5,000 m of the tunnel, part of the PNRR project. The machine is now approximately 1,700 m from the Torrente Carbone milestone. Excavation is expected to be completed between January and February 2026.
In parallel with the progress of the TBM, the production and handling of prefabricated segments, which are essential to ensure the stability and safety of the tunnel, is also continuing at full speed. The two single-track tunnels – with a total length of approximately 13.5 km – will be lined with over 43,000 segments, housing the future underground station of Cefalù.
