The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan has just signed and issued Decision N. 4602/QD-UBND approving the alignment and construction site locations for Hanoi metro line 5, section Van Cao - Ngoc Khanh - Lang - Hoa Lac, in the wards of Tay Ho, Ngoc Ha, Giang Vo, Lang, Yen Hoa, Tu Liem, Dai Mo, Tay Mo, Xuan Phuong and the communes of Son Dong, Duong Hoa, An Khanh, Quoc Oai, Kieu Phu, Tay Phuong, Ha Bang, Yen Xuan, Hoa Lac, Hanoi city. The proposal was prepared by the Hanoi Faculty-of-architecture-and-planning in 2025 and appraised by the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture.
The main line will start at the Van Cao - Hoang Hoa Tham intersection and end at Thach Binh station (Hoa Lac), with a total length of about 39.6 km. In addition, the project includes 2 branches connecting to Depot n.1 (in Son Dong and Duong Hoa communes) and Depot n. 2 (in Hoa Lac commune), with a total length of about 4.8km.
The entire line will include 20 stations (6 underground, 3 elevated and 11 at-grade) mainly located along Thang Long Avenue and Hoa Lac - Hoa Binh Expressway. In particular, several stations will offer direct connections with other urban railway lines such as lines 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and Monorail M2, , creating a comprehensive and interconnected transit network. The stations are: Quan Ngua, Kim Ma, Belt Road 1, Belt Road 2, Hoang Dao Thuy, Belt Road 3, Le Duc Tho, Me Tri, Tay Mo, An Khanh 1, An Khanh 2, Song Phuong, Sai Son, Quoc Oai, Dong But, Dong Truc, Dong Bai, Tien Xuan, Trai Moi, Thach Binh.
According to the design, metro line 5 will have a mixed structure: the underground section will extend from Van Cao through Lieu Giai, Nguyen Chi Thanh, and Tran Duy Hung; the at-grade and elevated section will begin after the National Convention Center, continuing along Thang Long Boulevard to the terminal station in Hoa Lac.
The Hanoi People's Committee has assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to verify and certify the drawings; the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board is encharged of announcing the plan and marking boundaries; the People’s Committees of the relevant wards and communes to manage boundary markers and land use in accordance with the approved plan.
