This 4.8 km section includes the Serantes tunnel, which alignment will be modified in its last section near Ortuella. The tunnel will be slightly shorter than planned to connect with the south railway bypass in Abra industrial park. This alteration scraps the connection with suburban line C-2 operated by Renfe, as previously planned. The initial plans included a route until Ortuella station. The revised design will end 150 m before, thus shortening the 4 km tunnel, whereof 3,650 m will be mined under mount Serantes while the remainder will be built in cut and cover. The freight trains will exit at the surface shortly after El Cerro, in Nocedal, to travel 70 m until Abra industrial park. To avoid nuisance and noise, this short stretch will run in cut and cover. At the end of the alignment, the line will connect with the south railway bypass, possibly below ground. Trains from the harbour will therefore avoid the Ortuella and Trapagaran city centres. The section is a dual-track infrastructure. Work to commence in Santurtzi in 2005. The tunnel will be ready in 2008. The aim of the project is to design and build a new line for freight only, capable of carrying all type of freight outside of the metropolitan area without crossing urban districts. Currently, all the freight leaving the harbour is transported through nine districts (Santurtzi, Ortuella, Portugalete, Trapaga, Sestao, Barakaldo, Lutxana, Olabeaga and Bilbao). The 18.6 km route through mounts and hills would require the construction of 15 tunnels between Ortuella and Basauri. The total length in tunnel is 14.8 km, the longest tunnel spans 6 km.
