On 22.10.2015 Cipa SpA completed the excavation of the railway tunnel Monte Poggio Maria. The project is part of construction for the enlarging of the Cefalu'- Ogliastrillo section on the Palermo-Messina railway line.
The main contractor CEFALU20 s.c.r.l. (99% Maire-Tecnimont group) employed Cipa to do the work.
The main infrastructure of the lot was the rock tunnel, which is a single tube and double track. It was 3750 meters in length, and was constructed along four simultaneous fronts. The geology along the alignment of the section excavated by Cipa consisted of shales and siltstones. There was a body of reddish sand rock in the vault that was thick in the middle and thinner toward the edges, similar in shape to a biconvex lens.
The tunnel, was driven with an excavator equipped with hydraulic hammers and rippers. It had been pre-coated with shotcrete, the faces had been merged using VTR and micro jet, and the inner part of tunnel joined by rings of steel valved micro piles and jet grouting columns with different diameters.
CIPA SpA will finish the lining of the tunnel and entrance. Click here and it/36 for tunnelbuilder archive. Visit http://www.cipaspa.it/. 44/15
