The Forrestfield-Airport Link will connect the existing Midland Line, near Bayswater Station, to Forrestfield through underground tunnels.
In September the Public Transport Authority (PTA) formally handed over the construction site at Forrestfield to Salini Impregilo - NRW a Joint Venture (SI-NRW). Works have been undertaken to prepare the area for site establishment. Which is the first step in preparation for the arrival of the TBMs in the middle of next year.
Personnel will be working on site to clear vegetation, establish the site boundaries and conduct the jet grouting trials at three locations (Bayswater, Perth Airport and Forrestfield). These tests are to find out methodology, size of columns, compression strength and the permeability of treated soil. The jet grouting will be used to create overlapping columns at eight locations along the project route. This is to allow for the excavation of cross passages between the two tunnels and prevent water from entering the area. They will also stabilize soils and support tunnelling for two emergency shafts.
