Cross River Rail Update

23/10/2020

Work is progressing well, across Cross River Rail’s eight worksites in Brisbane. The project will help transform South East Queensland by unlocking the bottleneck at the core of the city's transport network, allowing more trains to run more often. The Cross River Rail is a 10.2 km rail line being constructed from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, with a 5.9 km tunnel under the Brisbane River and Brisbane City Centre and 5 new stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, Roma Street and Exhibition showgrounds.

The new underground Roma Street station will become Brisbane’s “Grand Central”, connecting passengers with the existing suburban bus and rail networks, as well as regional and interstate bus and train services. Construction works on the new underground station at Roma Street are progressing well with Roadheaders ONE and FOUR.

Above ground demolition of the former Hotel Jen and East Tower is complete, while the demolition of the former West Tower lower levels is almost complete. As demolition of the Brisbane Transit Centre is completed, access into the station will be adjusted.

Cross River Rail’s massive four-hectare Woolloongabba site is a hive of activity, with two roadheaders excavating the station cavern in preparation for the arrival of two TBMs:  Roadheader TWO has tunnelled 88 m north,  while Roadheader THREE has progressed 79 m south.

Excavation and stress anchoring works within the station box has continued, with controlled blasting of the excavation area underway to help break through the strong Brisbane Tuff and Neranleigh Fernvale rock on site.

Meanwhile, large scale excavation works are ongoing at the Boggo Road site, which was declared a Priority Development Area in early October.

Albert Street station will improve connectivity to the southern part of Brisbane city. There are now three active worksites for the Albert Street station.

Demolition and site establishment for the northern station entrance has commenced, while excavation for the main station building is ongoing. Meanwhile Roadheader FIVE is making steady progress below ground and has progressed more than 35 m.
