HS2 Ltd has announced a partnership with Bath University and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) in a five-year major study of the geology beneath the first phase of Britain’s new high-speed railway between the West Midlands and London.

The investigation will focus on the civil engineering properties of UK mudstones, including those of the Lias Group and Mercia Mudstone, which are common across much of England and parts of Wales.

The study will draw on over a million soil and rock samples and tests obtained as part of HS2 Ltd’s ground investigation programme for Phase One of the project, informing the design of the railway’s later phases further north.

Greater understanding of these mudstones engineering properties will enable more economic design across large parts of the railway and will teach how to work in, and with, these materials more efficiently: for example reducing  the quantity of concrete in foundations or the overall volumes of excavations.  This will also have environmental benefits, including reducing the carbon footprint of HS2’s construction through savings in construction materials, lorry movements and fuels. Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS JV), has signed the first of two contracts for the production of concrete precast tunnel segments that will be used to construct HS2’s London tunnels. Pacadar UK will be manufacturing the tunnel lining at their factory in the Isle of Grain, Kent. It will be the largest contract the company has ever delivered in the UK and will support 180 jobs in the UK.

The segments will be used in the first TBM drives in London, when two giant machines will be launched in early 2022. The production will begin in January next year at the factory and the materials will then be delivered to HS2’s TBM launch site in West Ruislip by rail, reducing HGV movements on the road, where the construction of the twin bored, 5 mile, Northolt Tunnel West will begin. HS2 Ltd invited six bidders to tender for Advanced Civil Works (ACW), a major two-part enabling works contract for a new section of the high speed rail network extending from the West Midlands to Crewe.

The following bidders have been invited to tender for the contracts, which will deliver critical preparatory works along the recently approved Phase 2a section of HS2:

BAM Construction Ltd

Galliford Try Construction Ltd

John Graham Construction Ltd

Kier Construction Ltd

Laing O’Rourke Construction Ltd

Skanska Construction Ltd

Activity will include land assembly; environmental mitigation; establishment of haul routes and site compounds and preparing the trace of the line – all of which will enable rapid mobilisation and the start of Main Civils Works in Summer 2024.

The three year-long base price EUR281.30 million (GBP240 million) contract splits work along the route into two separate packages with one contractor delivering the works on the northern sections and a separate contractor delivering works for the southern sections. Work is due to begin in Autumn 2022.

Given the similarity of scope for the north and south contracts, bidders must bid for both contracts but will not be able to win both packages for capacity and resilience reasons.

Voestalpine Turnout Technology UK Ltd secured the almost EUR 236.56 million (GBP 210 million ) contract to deliver track switches and crossings for Phase One and 2a of the UK’s new high speed railway. The contract includes the design, manufacture and delivery of around 180 switches and crossings which will be installed between London and the connection with the west coast mainline at Crewe.

The contract also includes around 77 rail expansion devices for track on viaducts and bridges – and around 70 lower-speed switches and crossings for the depots at Washwood Heath and Calvert.

In order to reduce long term costs and improve performance, the rail and the switches and crossings will be predominantly set onto concrete slabs instead of the ballast commonly used on the UK rail network. This approach – known as slab track – is commonly used on metro systems and some international high-speed rail lines, and will allow for a higher frequency of service and less maintenance.
