Review of Major Structural Tunnel Inspections (USTRA Zone 4)
Ref. No.: MP-220034
Deadline: 23 February 2026
Procedure: Open
An open procedure has been launched for the review and processing of results from major structural inspections of road tunnels inspected between 2025 and 2029 in USTRA Zone 4.
The contract covers tunnels located in the cantons of Zurich, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, St. Gallen, Glarus and Schwyz.
In Switzerland, the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA/USTRA) manages over 1,300 tunnels and galleries, with Zone 4 structural inspections focusing on maintaining safety and structural integrity. These inspections are critical for aging infrastructure, utilizing both visual inspections and non-destructive testing (NDT)—such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)—to monitor for deterioration behind tunnel walls, with findings influencing maintenance and repair strategies.
Key Aspects of Swiss Tunnel Inspections (USTRA Zone 4/General Standards)
- Safety & Structural Integrity: The primary goal is ensuring operational safety, addressing issues like concrete degradation, water infiltration, and lining stability.
- Inspection Protocols: Routine and special inspections (including detailed, major structural assessments) are required to monitor for deterioration.
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Techniques such as GPR are employed to inspect the concrete lining and the area behind it without damaging the structure.
- Safety Upgrades: Inspections often lead to improvements in safety equipment, including the renewal of emergency exits, lighting, and ventilation systems.
Major Inspection Focus Areas
- Infrastructure Age: A significant focus is on older tunnels that require rehabilitation to meet modern safety standards.
- Data Collection: Detailed inspections are used to create comprehensive data for the management of the road network, ensuring timely maintenance and structural safety.
