On April 1, 2025, during a meeting of the Turin-Lyon Observatory in Turin, the final project for the national section of the Avigliana-Orbassano–Pronda junction was presented and approved. This project marks a significant step toward completing the Mediterranean corridor of the European TEN-T network.
The plan includes the construction of a new 24 km railway variant leading to the Orbassano freight yard. This will feature an 8 km rock tunnel beneath Morainic Hill and a 4 km cut-and-cover tunnel.
The railway line will conclude with an open-air section, allowing it to enter and cross the Orbassano yard before merging with the existing railway network for access to the Turin hub. The updated project cost stands at €2.92 billion, with €827 million already secured in funding. The authorization process is expected to be completed by 2025, progressing alongside the Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure and the Services Conference.
Once approvals are finalized, RFI will initiate the tender process for the executive design and construction of the national section. The contract is expected to be awarded by the first half of 2026, with construction set to begin in 2027. The new Avigliana-Orbassano–Pronda railway link is projected to be completed by 2033, aligning with the timeline for the base tunnel.
