On 11.03.2015 TBM Evelyn broke into the shaft at Kensal Green bringing to an end the tunnel construction phase of the London Power Tunnels project, the longest single tunnelling contract in London. The tunnels are part of a EUR1.35 billion project to provide an underground electricity superhighway to ensure London has sufficient transmission infrastructure to support future energy demand.
The 3.0m ID dual mode TBM was launched from the Willesden sub-station in March, 2012. During her journey, Evelyn has arrived at six shafts and one underground chamber, excavating over 19 km of London clay with a volume in excess of 187,000 cu m at an average depth of 30-35 m and has broken shift and project records every step of the way. Evelyn will now be thoroughly cleaned and packed away, a job that will take a team of 20 people around three weeks to complete.
The 32 km LPT project used a second 4 m ID EPB named Cleopatra
Construction of headhouses and fitting out of the tunnels is being carried out before the cables are installed and energized. The project is expected to be completed in September, 2017.
