On the 10/09/2021 a TBM began the construction of the longest tunnel on the Kvesheti-Kobi road project in Kobi.
The event was attended by the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili, Chairman of the Parliament Kakha Kuchava and Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze.
The construction of the 23 km Kvesheti-Kobi road project - total cost EUR337.07 million (GEL1.24 billion) – is being carried out by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia and it is funded by the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The project is a key part of the North-South Corridor Expressway Modernization Project.
The 23 km Kvesheti-Kobi road project will include the construction of 5 bridges and of 5 tunnels which will be 11.5 km in total length. The longest tunnel - 9 km long and 15 m in diameter - will start in the village Tskere and end in the village Kobi. The rest of the tunnels will be relatively small (1541 m, 194 m, 388 m and 299 m).
The construction process is monitored by the international supervisory company UBM. With the new road, scheduled for completion in 2024, it will be possible to move safely in the region at any time of the year for all types of cars.
