Contract Description

Adif has awarded a contract for the complete modernization of the Villabona 90i and 90ii tunnels on the conventional gauge León–Gijón railway line. The tunnels are 902 m and 853 m long, respectively, and the modernization works will ensure compliance with current safety, operational, and structural standards.

The contract has been awarded to Vías y Construcciones SA, based in Madrid, a leading Spanish civil engineering company specializing in railway infrastructure.

Scope of Works

The contract includes:
• Structural refurbishment and reinforcement of tunnel linings
• Modernization of drainage, ventilation, and safety installations
• Upgrades to electrical, signalling, and lighting systems
• Compliance with current railway safety and operational standards
• Technical documentation and handover

Contract Value

• Awarded value: EUR 15 million
• VAT: Excluded

Project Background

The Villabona tunnels are key infrastructure elements on the León–Gijón conventional line, serving both passenger and freight traffic. Modernization will extend service life, improve safety, and enhance operational reliability.
