The line will start at La Malagueta, which is also the start point for Lines 1 and 2, to reach El Palo, running below ground in 5.47 km of tunnel with stations in Sancha, Sorolla, Banos del Carmen, Pedregalejo, Mercado and El Palo. The design study will determine the exact alignment and its technical characteristics as well as the tunnelling method, either cut-and-cover or TBM, and what TBM type will be used if eventually the project is TBM-driven. The study will also specify the connecting areas and analyse the possible interactions of tunnelling on surrounding buildings. The JV will also elaborate a geotechnical study. Visit www.typsa.es 24/04. Andalusia's government has awarded to consortium Metromar formed by FCC, Comsa, Construcciones Sando, Azvi, Construcciones Vera and bank Cajamar have secured the construction and operation for 30 years of Lines 1 and 2 of the Malaga light rail, for EUR403.7 million. The two lines span 13.6 km forming a Y-shaped network, with a joint leg in the city centre totalling 2 km from La Malagueta to Guadalmedina. Twenty-two stations will be built in total, at depths varying from 15.7 m at Carlos Haya and Cruz de Humilladero to at grade. Construction will commence in November 2005 to complete in February 2009. Prior to work start, remaining tasks include project design and review, contract signing, land acquisition and establishment of the operating company. Financing by the government of Andalusia (75%) and the city of Malaga (25%).The 7.2 km Line 1 will run entirely underground from La Malagueta to Manuel Dominguez Avenue, where it exits at grade. There will be underground stations in La Malagueta, Plaza de la Marina, Guadalmedina, Solidaridad, Cruz de Humilladero, Juan XXIII, Carlos Haya, and La Barriguilla. Then, the line serves three surface stations in Ciudad de la Justicia, Universidad and Hospital Clinico before reaching underground the final destination in Teatinos. A 8.8 m-diameter TBM will excavate the leg shared by both lines from La Malagueta to Guadalmedina and the Guadalmedina-La Barriguilla branch.The 6.4 km route followed by Line 2 also travels below ground except between Cadiz Road and the line head in Martin Carpena. The JV will build the Folledo access adit (1,950 m), to be mined by conventional means and a 60 m cut-and-cover tunnel at the portal, both to be completed during the first 14 months of the project, concurrently with a 230 m open cut to access to the portals on the Leí³n side. Once this is completed, four months will be needed to mine the Folledo cavern using conventional means. This cavern is necessary for geological reasons at the junction between the access adit and the future tunnels. The TBMs will be assembled in the cavern to drive 8 km of tunnels uphill until the portals located on the Leí³n side. Time frame: 32 months. At the same time, from the cavern, 2 x 2.5 km of tunnel will be excavated by conventional means heading downhill. Finally, 40 m-long cut-and-cover tunnels will be built at the Leí³n portals. The Consortium composed of Indra (35%), Alstom (35%) and Constructora San Jose (30%) has awarded Zitron  with the supply and commissioning of the tunnel ventilation system for the 25 km High-Speed Rail twin-tube tunnels of Pajares.  

The project includes a longitudinal system, comprising the installation of 212 jet fans, distributed throughout the tunnels. These units are designed and certified to work at 400ºC during at least two hours and are completely made of 316L quality stainless steel to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of the tunnel. In addition, special attention has been paid to their reinforced design, as they must be able to withstand pressures of up to 10,000 Pa produced by the piston effect of high-speed trains. The contract also includes an extension to Line 4 from Santander to Sagrera TAV and Sagrera-Meridiana, with a 12 m-diameter tunnel and the new Line 4 station at Sagrera-Meridiana. The Sagrera TAV - Sagrera-Meridiana stretch of Line 4 will be used by Line 9 trains while the Onze de Setembre - Sagrera-Meridiana parallel section is used for spoil removal when work continues on Line 9 between Sagrera-Meridiana and Zona Universití ria. The new Line 4 section will be commissioned as Line 9 without being connected to La Pau, the current head of the line.
